The Johnson Tragedy

The inquest on the body of George Johnson, who was killed by some
assassin early Wednesday morning, closed Wednesday evening. The
following jury was impaneled, the inquest begin held by Justice Fleury.

I. P. Burnett, (foreman), Jos. Melvin, Dan. O'Boyle, timothy Sullivan,
G. A. Woods, Donald Kelly, Will George and Jos. S. Calles.

Five witnesses were examined, and at the close of their testimony the
jury returning the following verdict: 'We, the jury, having been
summoned by H. W. Fleury, acting coroner, to hold an inquest on the
jury of George Johnson, deceased, do find that he came to his death by
gun-shot wounds inflicted upon him on the 22d day of October, 1890, at
West Prescott, Yavapai county, Arizona; that he was about 23 years old,
a resident of Yavapai county, Arizona, and that his death was caused by
said shooting at the hands of some person or persons unknown to the
jury.'

The body of Johnson was viewed by many of his friends, yesterday, as it
laid in Undertaker Randal's shop.

Riley Johnson, a brother of the deceased, arrived from Williamson
Valley yesterday, and was much affected on seeing the lifeless corps of
his brother. The father and mother of deceased and another brother
live at Walnut Grove.

John Chart, who is accused of the murder, still insists that he knew
nothing of it, and made a vigorous protest last evening against being
locked in a cell. He has employed Herndon & Hawkins and Judge Wright
for his defense, and by their advice refuses to discuss the tragedy or
his troubles with Johnson further than to to deny any connection with
the former.

The funeral took place this afternoon, and was attended by a large
concourse of citizens.

Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
