Bertha Jean DeSpain Porter died Jan. 27, 2016, at home after a long battle with illness with her husband and daughters by her side. She was born Oct. 7, 1930, in Joseph City in the family home to Ivy (Randall) and Charles DeSpain.

She spent her childhood growing up in Joseph City, Holbrook and surrounding area ranches. She attended grade school in Joseph City and graduated from Holbrook High School.

She met her life love when they were very young children in Joseph City and they were married Jan. 14, 1949, in the Mesa Temple. They lived in Joseph City for a few years and then moved to Holbrook to set up and run their business, Service Electric, until just a year ago.

She loved her family, especially her grandchildren. They were very blessed to have her as a constant figure in their childhood. She loved her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother and bookkeeper for the business and she loved the cowboy life she knew as a child. She had a deep love for her little dogs and treated them like her children.

Camping and hunting trips with family and friends were her next great love. Reminiscing around a camp fire, big enjoyable meals, long walks and togetherness were always made time for. She was always the most happy and content while on the mountain with family.

She also loved her church and took pride in holding and giving her best in all the church callings she held. She believed in her Heavenly Father and Jesus and the comfort they brought to her life.

She leaves behind her husband of 67 years, Hal D. Porter; daughters Jeanie Porter, Martha (Jack) Brooks and Carolyn (Gary) Rice; grandchildren Timalee (Chad) Guetterman, Travis (Melissa) Brooks, Ben (Annie) Cluff, Trenton Brooks, Mana (Kevin) Hoskins and Gary Rice Jr.; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother Brad Charles (Donna) DeSpain.

She was preceded in death by her younger sister, father and mother. Services were held Monday, Feb. 1, at the Holbrook Stake Center.

A special thank-you is given to Accord Hospice for the help, support and love they showed her and the family during this long and difficult time.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the First Step Workshop or the Humane Society in Holbrook.
