| Camp Verde Bugle, Cottonwood, Arizona Friday, March 4, 2016 Obituary: Michael (Mike) Andrew Philips 1941 - 2016 Michael Andrew Philips, 74, passed away January 19, 2016. Our hero was born in Houghton, Michigan to Ray and Juliet Philips. Mike attended St. Mary's High School in Phoenix where he met his sweetheart and lifelong soulmate Lyla Mae Fuller. They had one son and two daughters together. Mike joined the Phoenix Fire Department in 1962 as a rookie firefighter and was eventually promoted to Captain. He was a true hero, not only to his family, but to many others. He received the Benjamin Franklin International Fire Service Valor Award in 1975 and was also inducted into the Hall of Flame in Phoenix. It was a big deal to us, but for Mike "it's not such a big deal." He worked for the fire department for 22 years until he retired. During his retirement, Mike built his dream home in Camp Verde. He was a true craftsman and literally built his home from the ground up, with perfection. Mike is preceded in death by his parents, his son Mark and sister Karen Costello. He is survived by his wife Lyla, children Vikki Stevens (Scott), Linzi Philips (Joyce LaPointe), grandchildren Barney (Danielle) Tyler and Marcus, great granddaughter Amanda and sister Donna Jones. |
