| The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, April 20, 2016 Anthony J. Krzysik, Ph.D. was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Sept. 20, 1941 to Anthony and Catherine Krzysik. He passed away on April 14, 2016. Tony was an outdoor boy interested in science and nature from the time he was very young until he passed away. He grew up loving to fish, hike, explore the outdoors and learn all he could about our natural world. His love of nature also made him an avid birder, fisherman and hiker with a strong commitment to the importance of science and nature in our everyday lives. He relished relating that importance to everyone. He was especially interested in amphibians and reptiles. Tony earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Carnegie-Mellon University, an M.S. in Chemistry and Physics from University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in Biology-Ecology from the University of Pittsburgh and Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology. His post-doctoral research at the University of Illinois centered on the Design of Fish and Wildlife Habitats for Game and Non-Game Species in Severely Disturbed Landscapes. Tony had over 50 years of research and teaching experience in ecology, biology, experimental design, statistical analyses, chemistry and physics. He worked for the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy where he assembled a national research team to develop ecological indicators and statistical metrics for monitoring ecosystems and landscape disturbances. He was a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Committee: “Economic and Non-Economic Value of Biodiversity.” He served on a Russian Academy of Sciences International Team to assess ecological impacts to terrestrial freshwater and marine ecosystems. He was also a member of the Association for the Advancement of Science. Tony’s recent research emphasis was on the “Ecology and Biogeography of Arizona’s Central Highlands and the Verde River Watershed,” “Mojave Desert Ecology and Biogeography,” and a “Synthesis and Summary of Climate Science.” Locally he taught classes at Embry Riddle University, Prescott College and the Highlands Center for Natural History. His love of science and nature has opened the door of knowledge and understanding for many adults and children in the Central Arizona Highlands. Anthony J. Krzysik is survived by his wife, Mary, who lives in Prescott; and his brother, Ed, who lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Tony, a great resource for the Prescott area, will be sorely missed by all who had the opportunity to know him. Celebration of Life will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2016 at the Highlands Center for Natural History.
