Raised mostly in Wickenburg, AZ, graduated Wickenburg High School in 1965. Married Jake Bender of Prescott, AZ, the same year and moved to Prescott, where they lived most of their lives.

Jake and Karlene had one child, Jake Jr. who now lives in Phoenix and is an Independent Contractor.

Jake and Karlene moved to Congress in 2000 after both retired and built their retirement home on 4 acres near the Old Congress Mine.
