James M MacAvoy
(April 13, 1951 - April 14, 2016)

James (Jim) M. MacAvoy, longtime Northern Arizona and Flagstaff resident, passed away peacefully in his home on April 14, 2016. He was generous, kind, intelligent and deeply beloved by his friends and family including Anne Baldwin and daughter who he is survived by, Heather.

Jim was born on April 13, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in New Jersey. He graduated with an undergraduate degree from Roanoke, Virginia. Although east coast born and raised, Jim spent the majority of his adult life in the Southwest.

He received his Doctor of Education Degree from Northern Arizona University in 1986, and became a Licensed Psychologist from the Arizona State Board of Psychologist Examiners in 1989. Jim received his certification from the National School Psychology Certification Board. He worked as a School Psychologist for the Flagstaff Unified School District for many years before opening his private practice with schools on the Navajo and Hopi Reservations.

Jim's kind and gentle manner made him an immediate friend, both to the students with whom he worked, and the staff of the schools with whom he collaborated. Jim's love of the outdoors was a constant throughout his life. He was an avid fly fisherman fishing the lakes and streams in Arizona, along with other western states. A particular favorite location was the high alpine lakes in and around Red Lodge, Montana. He enjoyed hiking with friends and walking the hill behind his home with his special dog, Oreo.

Jim's other love was music. He was an accomplished mandolin and guitar player often getting together with friends to enjoy playing music. He also loved listening to all types of music from classical to bluegrass.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
