Former Postal Worker Is Dead

Ernest O. Mattewson, 58, for many years a postal clerk here, died in the Yavapai county hospital in Miller Valley this morning following an illness of long duration.

He was a brother-in-law of Frank Paine, Prescott transfer man, and an uncle of the late Crosby Paine, meter man of the Arizona Power company. Another nephew, Morris L. Paine of San Gabriel, Calif., survives.

Mr. Matthewson left the postal service in about 1912, it was learned from Warren F. Day, former Prescott postmaster, and went to Jerome as assistant postmaster for about a year. Upon his return he went into business with his brother-in-law, the transfer man, but for the last few years the condition of his health did not permit his active participation in any business endeavor. He entered the county hospital last July.

For many years he was a member of Arizona lodge, No. 1, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and also the Dude hose company of the Prescott Volunteer Fire department. During his last years he spent quite a bit of time around the fire hall. Friends said he never was married.

Arrangements had not been made by this afternoon for Mr. Mattewson's burial.

Transcriber's note: Mr. Mathewson is buried at the Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
