| Camp Verde Bugle, Cottonwood, Arizona Saturday, May 7, 2016 Helena "June" Mullens, 97-year-old resident of Flagstaff and Lake Montezuma, Arizona, passed away in Cottonwood on Monday, May 02, 2016. June was born in Bancroft, Nebraska, in 1918. She attended Wayne State Teachers College where she earned a teaching degree. She taught in one-room rural schools in Nebraska. While at Wayne State College, she met fellow student Lyle Mullens who taught at Bancroft Schools. June and Lyle were married just prior to WWII, and she lived with her mother while he served in the 5th Air Force of the Army Air Corp in the South Pacific. After WWII, Lyle went to graduate school where he earned his doctorate in education. In 1960 the couple moved their three children to Flagstaff, Arizona where Lyle taught Education at Arizona State College, now NAU. June lived there until Lyle's death in 1981. She then moved to what was to be their retirement home in Lake Montezuma, Arizona. June was known for her gardening skills and beautiful flower arrangements and decorative felt church banners. She was also known for her God's Eyes, a Native American craft of woven yarn and wood. She had her art displayed in the College of Education foyer at NAU and the Little America lobby. She filled special orders for people all over the U.S. June was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Flagstaff 1960-1980 and Peace Lutheran Church in Cottonwood 1981-present. She is preceded in death by her husband Lyle, her daughter Dana and two brothers, Hyle and Hal. She is survived by her sister, Harriet, two sons Rockne of Denver and Lanny of Scottsdale, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Services are scheduled for Monday, May 9, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Flagstaff at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be directed to the Lyle Mullens Memorial Scholarship #1152 c/o Northern Arizona University Foundation, P.O. Box 4094, Flagstaff, AZ 86011.
