BARKLEY, John Jule


Arizona Republic (Phoenix AZ) Sunday, May 31, 1981, p E15 John J. Barkley, 84, a Phoenix attorney who was still active in the practice he started in 1945, died May 29, 1981, at his home. Mr. Barkley, a Mesa native, was a chief escrow officer for the Phoenix Title and Trust Co. before going into law. In 1916, he served as a civilian clerk for the federal government's Border Patrol during the Pancho Villa campaign. He was a sergeant in the Army Signal Corps in World War I. After the war he worked for the Tempe National Bank. Mr. Barkley's pioneer parents, John and Emma Barkley, once operated a stage line from Tucson to Helvetia. He was a member of the Maricopa County and American Bar associations, State Bar of Arizona, the Masonic Silver Trowel Lodge 29 and Central United Methodist Church. He had been active in Boy Scouts. Survivors include his wife, Lela; son, John; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday at A.L. Moore & Sons Mortuary, 333 W. Adams.
