Emma Jean Henry - 1937-2016

Emma Jean Henry, nee Barner, 78, of Clarkdale, Arizona, passed away of complications of breast cancer on May 16, 2016.

Emma Jean was born to Bud Barner and Ann Kelly Kartchner in Taylor, Arizona, on June 29, 1937. She was preceded in death by her parents, two loving sisters, Barbara and Shirley, and stepfather Bill Kelly.

She was raised in Winslow, Arizona where she excelled as an athlete and as a student. She was selected as the Salad Bowl Princess for Winslow High School in 1955 by her school peers.

Emma Jean graduated with two degrees in education from NAU and was a dedicated teacher and coach at Camp Verde High School and Clarkdale Elementary School. She retired after 30-plus years of teaching. She loved her students.

She is survived by her sons, Terry Henry of Phoenix and Todd Henry of Cottonwood, and most loving daughter Vicki Ann Rawlinson of Flagstaff and Cottonwood who was her mom's most dedicated caregiver for the last few years; also by her brother Larry Winston Barner of Winslow, ex-husband Tom Henry of Cottonwood, six grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Emma Jean was eager to become a mom and loved being one. She loved protecting, nurturing and doting on her three children.

She loved playing sports, especially softball and water skiing, at both of which she excelled. She was noted as an exceptionally good cook. She was also known for making and giving away baby quilts. If you have a quilt made by Emma would you please bring it to the services -- we would like to get a photo.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 20, at 12 noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cottonwood with services following at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery.
