ROBERGE, MD,
Jerome T. (Jerry)
The White Mountain Independent,
Show Low, Arizona ~ 05/27/2016
Dr. Jerome T. Roberge, 86, departed his earthly life March 5, 2016.
Jerry practiced his specialty of urology in Battle Creek, Mich., Yuma and Phoenix Valley. He was a devoted family man with an appreciation of all creation both visually and studiously. His many hobbies included writing, drawing, wood carving and poetry. His love of learning and reading gave him a wealth of knowledge on just about any topic put to him.
When, as a young medical graduate, he held his certification in one hand and a draft notice in the other. He was assigned to a U.S. Navy transport where he served as medical officer, Lt JG. While at sea, on a ship without surgical facilities, a sailor had an attack of appendicitis. Emergency surgery was needed but without surgical instruments his creative skills were challenged; somehow he fashioned a substitute from an ordinary spoon. After successful surgery and recovery, the sailor returned to duty. After reaching port, as Jerry disembarked, all sailors aboard stood at attention and saluted him. Being a modest man, he never mentioned this heroic deed to anyone with the exception of his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Nelia Bernice Roberge; son Jerome Roberge Jr.; daughter Sara Roberge; stepsons Martin Devine, Patrick Devine and Timothy Devine; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A requiem Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at Saint Mary of the Angels Catholic Church in Pinetop.
In lieu of flowers, his family has requested a donation to Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix.
