Show Low, Arizona ~ 06/14/2016

Stephen W. Abel, 67, died in his sleep Saturday, May 7, 2016, while hospitalized with reoccurring pneumonia. His wife of 42 years, Jean Ann (Peach) Abel, and good friends were with him all night and in the morning when he passed away.

Steve was born in Grand Island, Neb., to Gordon W. Abel and Ellen F. (Vail) Abel. He also lived in Alaska, Texas, Germany and England before his father’s retirement from the Air Force and the family’s subsequent move to Arizona in the mid-1960s.

Steve graduated from McClintock High School, from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and later with a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, and from the University of Phoenix with an MBA.

Steve worked in retail management and real estate before becoming an engineer. He and his wife retired in Show Low in 2010 and enjoyed each day living in a friendly small town.

Steve was cheerful, fun loving, easy going, friendly and well liked and loved. Prior to retirement, he was a long-time member of Civitans and enjoyed stamp collecting, camping, hunting, riding motorcycles and quads and participating in a wide variety of sports including tennis, handball, sailing and snorkeling.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Church of Our Savior, 5147 Show Low Lake Road, in Lakeside (take White Mountain Boulevard to Summit hospital and turn east on Show Low Lake Road).

In lieu of flowers, a contribution to Camp Tatiyee, 5283 W. White Mountain Blvd., Lakeside, AZ 85929, would help provide camping opportunities for special needs individuals.
