| The Daily Local (West Chester PA) Thursday, February 25, 2016 Alma Gene Lyng of West Chester Alma Lyng, age 81, died on February 23rd 2016 at Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester PA. She was the wife of Robert J. Lyng, with whom she shared 59 years of marriage. She was the daughter of Alvin and Dorothy Kirch of Lowville NY and the mother of three children: Sarah J. des Jardins, Boston, N.Y., Thomas Lyng, Albany NY, and W. Arthur Lyng, Wickenburg, AZ. Born in Gloversville, N.Y., she spent her early years in Lowville, N.Y. graduated from Lowville Academy in 1952 and received a BS degree from Syracuse University in 1956. In 1979 she completed a Master of Education degree at the University of Delaware. After her marriage in 1956, she and her husband spent several years in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Brazil while her husband was employed by the E.I. DuPont Company. Alma had been a resident of Marshallton PA since 1988. Mrs. Lyng was a member of the NewTones Chorale, the Kennett Square Area Newcomers Club, a board member of Chester Co. Meals on Wheels and a founding member of the Friends of Martin's Tavern in Marshallton. Music was a big part of her life and she and her husband supported several local musical organizations throughout the area. She served for several years on the West Chester University School of Music Advisory Board, including two years as chairperson. She was an avid gardener, liked to play tennis and bridge and enjoyed entertaining and traveling. She took painting classes at the Chester Co. Art Association, and was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in West Chester, where she served as lector, member of the Pastoral council, and volunteer in the Dayroom. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a sister, Sue Thompson, of Waynesboro, Va. and two brothers, Henry and David Kirch, both from the Rochester, N.Y. area. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 1st, at Saint Agnes Church, 233 W. Gay St., West Chester, PA 19380 at 10AM. A visitation for family and friends will be held in the church from 9-10 AM before the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Martin's Tavern at 413 North Wawaset Road, West Chester PA 19382.
