| The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona Wednesday, July 13, 2016 Dorthy Jean Slattery was united with her Lord on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, and reunited with Thomas Slattery, the love of her life. Dorthy was born Feb. 22, 1927, to Claude S. and Bertha M. Porter. She attended school in Rock County, Neb. She worked as a teacher and waitress, and married Tom on May 19, 1945. Dorthy worked alongside Tom during his time of managing ranches, and in 1963, the couple settled in Newport, Neb., where they opened a store, “Slattery’s Market.” They owned and operated the market for 29 years, while raising nine children. Dorthy enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, spending time with her family and volunteering at her church, Bassett Assembly of God. She was a board member, Sunday school teacher and assisted with the youth group on camping trips and outings. She also enjoyed mission trips to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. After retiring from the store in 1992, she enjoyed traveling with Tom, and wintered for several years in Wickenburg before making it her permanent home in October 2010. Dorthy truly loved people, and with a deep love of God she took every opportunity to pray for, minister to and encourage the hurting and the lost. She gave of herself with such grace and dignity, and many lives were restored. Although Dorthy suffered many losses in life, one would never know it with her warm smile and attitude. She was a happy woman with a great sense of humor and a gift of making others feel loved. Dorthy leaves behind eight children, sons Mike (Karen) Slattery of Mosinee, Wis., Steve (Patti) Slattery of Wickenburg, Pat (Jeanne) Slattery of Stuart, Neb., daughters Marsha “Lynnie” Stamp of Elk Point, S.D., Rena (Tim) Koeneke of Wickenburg, Jan (Rod) Hackett of Wickenburg, Robin Goering of Auburn, Neb., and Krista (Jerry) Railsback of Wickenburg; 31 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents; her husband Tom; three children Tommy Lee, Angela and Mark; her brother Art Porter; and grandson Nathan. Memorials can be made to Bassett Assembly of God, 112 Park St., Bassett, NE 68714, and Slattery Family Scholarship Fund, RCHS Foundation, P.O. Box 326, Bassett, NE 68714. Two celebrations of life will take place, the first at 2 p.m. July 17 at Wickenburg Bible Fellowship (Seventh Day Adventist Church building), 970 N. Tegner St., and in October at Bassett Assembly of God Church. Arrangements were made by Wickenburg Funeral Home & Crematory. |
