| The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, June 29, 2016 Merlin S. Scanlan, 91, passed away peacefully June 26, 2016, surrounded by his family at the VA Hospice, Prescott, Arizona. He was born Aug. 17, 1924, to Merlin Sylvester and Beulah (Nunn) in El Paso, Texas. Merlin proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific. He worked for El Paso Natural Gas till his retirement in 1986, at which time they moved to Kingman, Arizona. He was an avid fisherman and his love of travel took him to all 50 states and some foreign countries. Preceding him in death was his “Sweet Bride” of 59 years, Jeanette Manning (Jan. 6, 2005); youngest daughter Eileen Girvin (June 8, 2015); youngest son Tim (Sept. 16, 2015); son-in-law Roger Pena (May 6, 2016); brothers Charles, Dennis, Norbert; and sister Mary Anne Grasso. Survived by his son Merlin T. Scanlan and wife Rose of Spring, Texas; daughter Colleen Pena of Prescott, Arizona; sisters Rose Anne Spudneck, Patti Ortega, Betty Anne Scanlan, Marie Hamilton; and brother Ronald Scanlan. He will be deeply missed by his 27 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and a host of relatives. Merlin’s family would like to express a heartfelt “Thank you” to all the doctors and nurses at the VA Hospice (Hero’s Way Unit) for their endless caring and love this past 13 months. Memorial Mass will be Friday, July 1, 2016, at Sacred Heart Parish, 150 Fleury Ave., Prescott. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family request donations to the American Cancer Society.
