| The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Thursday, July 14, 2016 Octovena (Octie) Hickman, 82, was born in Alf, Arkansas, on Oct. 14, 1933, to Jess and Grace Fountain, and passed to heaven to be with Jesus her Lord and Savior on July 11, 2016, in Prescott, Arizona. She was the eighth-born child of 10. Octie and her family moved to Phoenix in 1942. In June 1953, Octie met Don Hickman in Phoenix at an ice cream shop near 5th Avenue and Roosevelt, which was right next to a laundry that Don used on a regular basis. On June 26, 1954, after a year of courting, she married Don who has been her loving husband for 62 years. They started their family in Phoenix until moving to Prescott on Aug. 1, 1966. Octie made many friends as she worked at Ray’s PDQ Market, Food Basket and Safeway. After her retirement, she and Don often served as volunteers for many different community events including the Whiskey Row Marathon spaghetti dinner and as a poll worker. She and Don also served as greeters at Trinity Presbyterian Church where she loved her Church family. Octie loved lighthouses, which was fitting as she and Don served as a “lighthouse” of love for their kids and the kids in the neighborhood where they raised more than just their children on South Mount Vernon. She is survived by her loving husband, Don; sons, Don (Margueritte) Hickman, Gary (Helen) Hickman; daughters, Pamela (Taylor) Welch, Peggy (Dave) Mackey; son-in-law, Gil Higgins; grandchildren, Brance Hickman, Kristen (Ryan) Ellis, Julie Welch, Wyatt Welch, Will Higgins, Aaron (Ashley) Mackey, Whitney (Brian) Lynch, great-grand-children, Jonah Mackey, Lorelei and Audrey Lynch; brother, George Fountain; and sister, Edna Raub; as well as many neighbors who were fortunate enough to find their way to the Hickmans’ front door. She loved her family “more than all the leaves on all the trees.” Visitation will take place at Hampton Funeral Home, 240 S. Cortez St., Prescott, Arizona, on Friday, July 15, 2016, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 630 Park Avenue, Prescott, Arizona. Private interment to follow. Arrangements made by Hampton Funeral Home. Information provided by survivors. |
