| The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, July 27, 2016 Kirk Karl Oberholtzer of Chino Valley, Arizona, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2016. Born in Woodstock, Illinois, on Sept. 8, 1956. He was 59. As a young boy he moved to Laguna Beach, California, with his family after traveling there for a family vacation and his parents fell in love with the sleepy coastal town. Upon graduating from Laguna Beach High School in 1974, he entered the Navy and became an electrical engineer working on nuclear submarines. After completing his time in the Navy he put his electrical background to good use and became a lineman with Pacific Bell Telephone in Southern California. While living in California he was very active in his community, always giving back to others and helping those in need. He never hesitated to help his fellow coworkers or church members with a project after hours or on his days off. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 702 in San Juan Capistrano, California, a member of American Legion Post 222 in Laguna Beach, California, and active with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Retiring after a 33–year career with the phone company he moved to Chino Valley, Arizona, in 2012 to be closer to his youngest son, age 9, who had moved here with his mom. Once again he became active in his community, giving back to others. He became a Boy Scout Leader with Troop 7617 in Chino Valley when his son was old enough to join. He was also a member of American Legion Post 40 in Chino Valley as well as a member of the Chino Valley Noontime Lions. Always willing to lend a hand to others and get things done he could be counted on for a corny joke or a silly one-liner. He left an amazing legacy behind with all the young men he mentored in Boy Scouts over the years. He will be greatly missed and loved by all those that knew him. In lieu of flowers, he has requested that donations be made to his favorite charities. He is survived by his brother, Paul in Bremerton, Washington, brother, Gary in Elk Grove, California; sister, Roberta in Pasadena, Texas; son, Ben, and daughter-in-law Jenny of Chino Valley; daughter, Sarah of San Clemente, California; son, David of Chino Valley; stepson, Chris in Anaheim, California; stepdaughter, Dina of Chino Valley; stepson, Joey of Cedaredge, Colorado; granddaughters, Samantha and Marissa of Chino Valley; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Chino Valley Funeral Home with a service and potluck celebration of life on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Grace Baptist Church in Chino Valley, Arizona, at 10:30am. There is a Go Fund Me Account labeled “Mr. O. Memorial” if you would like to contribute. https://dm2.gofund.me/2fc8b8s. Information provided by survivors. |
