Rev. Dr. Barbara Feeney Powers was born Aug. 18, 1927, and made her transition to Spirit on Aug. 2, 2016. A long time resident of Prescott and member of Unity of Prescott, Powers was born in Boston, and with her husband Lee, raised a family of five children in Illinois and Wisconsin.

She was a pioneer of empowered women, being one of only four women who attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the 1940s (along with approx. 7,000 men ), earning a B.S. in chemistry.

The mother of five children, she earned a Masters Degree from Rockford College, a Ph.D in Educational Administration at the University of Wisconsin, rose to become principal of several high schools, Superintendent of Schools, and Dean of a college.

She overcame great adversity in her life, particularly, the sudden deaths of her daughter Charlotte at age 15 and her daughter Ellen at age 31.

After she “retired,” she earned another Doctorate of Divinity and founded a spiritual center in Prescott called The Wisdom Exchange.

She is survived by three sons, Dr. Peter Powers of Prescott, Stephen Powers of Topanga, California and Kenny Powers of Anchorage, Alaska; as well as five grandchildren—Yana and Charlotte Smith; Cedar, Temple and Iset Powers; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews nationwide.

A memorial service is planned for this Saturday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. at Unity of Prescott, 145 S. Arizona Ave. All are welcome.
