| The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, August 10, 2016, page 6a Catherine “Kate” Shugrue Schaffner of Prescott passed away early August 8, 2016, after a 16 month battle with brain cancer. Kate, married to Fred Schaffner for 30 years, and the mother of Madeleine of Phoenix and Andrew, a junior at California State at Northridge, was a member of the bar since 1989, and was serving as an Arizona Assistant Attorney General at the time of her illness. She had maintained a private practice for years both in the Midwest and in Arizona and loved helping victims of abuse and neglect and making adoptions possible for many families. The number of lives affected by Kate’s kindness and generosity is immeasurable. Kate and Fred met during undergraduate studies at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Kate went on to graduate from Creighton University Law School. She practiced in Omaha for many years and taught at Metropolitan Community College in the Paralegal program. A long-time member of the Soroptimist Club, she led the “Reach for the Stars” program, that provided a day of empowerment to at risk young girls in the community. She also served on the board of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for kids in Prescott and held leadership roles in a local estate planning group. Kate is also survived by her dad and mom, Richard and Nancy Shugrue of Prescott Valley; and sisters Margaret of Arvada, Colorado, and Mollie Protzman (Kurt) of Omaha; and faithful, loving friend Heather Seets of Prescott; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 10 AM on Friday, August 12 at The Heights Church, 2121 Larry Caldwell Rd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a favorite charity.
