Reuben Louis Baca, former resident of Winslow, died Aug. 26, 2016, in Phoenix with his family by his side. He was born Jan. 11, 1955, in Winslow to Lorenza Baca and Toni Archuleta. He was the oldest of four children.

As a child and in adolescence, Ruben lived in both Winslow and Springerville. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Colorado in 1973. He served in the U.S. Army.

Reuben worked briefly for the City of Winslow and Santa Fe Railway. He worked for the Arizona Department of Corrections at the Winslow State Prison, Perryville State Prison, Yuma State Prison, Lewis State Prison and Winslow Apache Prison as a lieutenant until his retirement in 2001.

Also a civic leader, he served on various boards and commissions within his community. He was a proud member of the BPOE Elks and served as exalted ruler for one term at the Winslow Lodge.

Reuben was quite the outdoors man. He loved to hunt and fish and ride horses. He has been both a guide and scout for National Geographic Magazine on some of their photo shoots in the wilderness. However, his passion was music. He played bass guitar and was the singer in his band, Crossfire.

He is survived by two children, Brandie (Gary) Hill and Kelly (Danica) Baca; four grandchildren, Montana Simpson, Draeden Hill, Daniel Baca and Demi Baca; one great-grandson, Stratton; his father, Lorenzo Baca; siblings Sandra (Gabe) Martinez, Dyan Baca and Felix Baca; other siblings Edward Baca, Lisette Sierra and Veronica Baca.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Toni Archuleta.

Services were held Saturday, Sept. 10, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Springerville. Private family interment will be held in Quemado, N.M., at a later date.
