| The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona January 2009 Charlotte Pickard Flahive A Celebration of Life service will be held to honor thelate Charlotte Pickard Flahive at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 21, which would have been her 99th birthday, at Samaritan Village, Prescott, Ariz. The Rev. Wayne Lang will officiate. Charlotte, a longtime resident of Prescott, died Jan. 23 with family and friends gathered around her to hold her hand and say goodbye. She was born in 1910 to Ward Pulver and May (Bancroft) Pulver in the town of Italy in upstate New York. She graduated from high school in Penn Yan, and from Syracuse University School of Nursing in 1932. Charlotte spent her professional career in Syracuse, N.Y., retiring in 1969 as associate director of nursing at Van Duyn Hospital in Syracuse, a 600 bed hospital for geriatrics and chronic diseases. Her first husband, Carl A. Pickard, died in 1963 and she married James Flahive in 1968, moving to Prescott in 1971. Charlotte became a volunteer, then president of the local community hospital auxiliary. She was a member of the Founding Committee of Samaritan Village and its Advisory Board. She also served on the Yavapai County Board of Health and its president for three terms. She served on the Yavapai Regional Medical Center's Board of Trustees for seven years, was its president for two years, and its director of volunteers. She was a member of the Arizona Hospital Association, a member of the Council on Planning, of the Salisbury Scholarship Committee and the Council on Volunteerism. She was also a long-time member of the Embry-Riddle College Board of Visitors. Throughout her life, her church was very important to her and, in 1965, she was ordained as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. Charlotte is predeceased by Mr. Flahive and her son, James Carl Pickard. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Horn of Prescott, her son, Donald P. Pickard of Syracuse, N.Y., eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Her family has always been very proud of Charlotte's accomplishments and probably will continue to be as her stories are handed down to the young ones coming up. Not everyone can say that their 98 year old grandmother was a fashion plate, rode a camel when 89, was computer literate and a fierce, opinionated political observer.
