Stirling C. Daykin passed away suddenly but peacefully at home in Flagstaff, Arizona, on Dec. 14, 2016, in the company of her dear husband, Philip.

Born on April 8, 1932, in Wyandotte, Michigan, Stirling attended Wyandotte High School and graduated from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 1954 with a B.A. in Music Education. It was there she met her husband-to-be, Philip D. Daykin. Her parents, Leslie and Lillian Cockburn, came to Michigan from Ontario, Canada.

Stirling and Phil lived for many years in Rocky River, Ohio, where they were active members of Lakewood Congregational Church and raised their two daughters. Stirling was a devoted mother yet also made time to grace this world with her glorious singing. She was a frequent soloist at Old Stone Church in Cleveland as well as at their own church. With Cleveland Opera Theater Ensemble, Stirling performed many of the lead soprano roles in the late 1970s-’80s, including Mimi in La Boheme, Violetta in La Traviata, and Adele in Die Fledermaus. She was also a highly respected voice teacher and coach in the Cleveland area.

Many friends and family members will remember her as an equally accomplished cook, avid Michigan Wolverines fan, and lover of travel and the outdoors. Stirling and Phil enjoyed travels to England, France, New Zealand, and China, as well as nine trips to Switzerland, where they did extensive hiking and enjoyed the beauty of the mountains.

In 1992, Stirling and Phil moved to Prescott, Arizona, where they lived for 16 years. They were members of First Congregational Church and each year could be spotted walking their Scottish Terriers in the annual Scottie Parade. While in Prescott, Stirling was President of the Rose Society. They moved to The Peaks in Flagstaff in 2008 and are members of the First Congregational Church of Flagstaff.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Philip Daykin; her children, Laura Daykin and Sarah Daykin; and their sweet Cairn Terrier-Poodle X, Fergie.

A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 11:30 a.m. at The Peaks, 3150 North Winding Brook Road, Flagstaff, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Stirling’s memory to any of the following: The American Heart Association, First Congregational Church of Flagstaff, or Lost Our Home Pet Foundation, of Tempe, Arizona.
