| Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ >>> Published on Friday, February 3, 2017 <<< Simon (Del) de la Garza, 88, passed Jan. 17, 2017 of natural causes at a nursing home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born to Simon and Sofia (Gandara) de la Garza on Sept. 26, 1928 in El Paso, Texas. He was an identical twin to Richard. After graduating from high school, they joined the Marine Corps at age 16. He served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and was a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient. After retiring from the Marine Corps, Del worked as a security guard for 17 years with SCE, retiring to Havasu. Del was a founding member of Havasu’s Marine Corps League where he was involved with Toys for Tots. Del, a long-time member of the London Bridge Civitan Club, volunteered with the Special Olympics. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, his first wife Peggy Jo, and his second wife Betty. He is survived by four daughters, Annie, Jayne, Lee and Lynne, his grandson Ernst, a niece Bernadette and a nephew Richard. Del will rest in peace in interment with his wife Betty at Lake Havasu Memorial Gardens. He will be deeply missed by friends and family. Our special thanks to the Civitan Club, the Marine Corps League and the Knights of Columbus for their support and kindness. Also special thanks to the staff at Life Spire, whose love and caring for Del was exceptional.
