| Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ >>> Published on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 <<< Edward (Ed) J. Sauer, 79, of Lake Havasu City passed away peacefully Feb. 3, 2017. He was born in Larchwood, Iowa to John and Agnes Sauer. He was one of seven children. Ed was a business owner, inventor and race car driver. He spent 20 years of his life racing primarily at Ascot Park. Racing was his passion -- he won five championships during his career. In 1957, Ed married the love of his life, Barbara Wittrock. At age 22, he moved Barbara and their two children to California. The couple had three more children while living in California. In 2000, Ed and Barbara retired to Havasu, but sadly, Barbara passed only a short time later. Every summer when the temperature rose, Ed traveled to visit his children and attend his family reunion in Iowa. There he spent time with his brothers, sisters, and many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed fishing with his son and found great delight in teaching all of his grandchildren -- Jeff, Lauren, Jill, Tim, Greg, Adam, Megan, Emily and Allison -- how to bait a hook. Ed was always quick with a joke and loved to make people laugh. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races, playing slots and dreaming up inventions. Ed was the rock of his family. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 45 years, Barbara, and his brothers Johnny and Larry. Ed is survived by his son Steve Sauer, daughters Lisa (Mike) Pera, Sherill (Dave) Ketchum, Julie (Tom) Jennings and Autumn (Rob) Podzunas, sisters Mary Giles and Cecelia Rice, brothers Tony Sauer and Clarence Sauer. A gathering of his family and friends is at Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to Hospice of Havasu, which took wonderful care of Barbara.
