It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lt. Col.
(Ret.) Jackson R. Pope. After 99 years of loving life, his “End of
Watch” was Feb. 23, 2017.

Affectionately dubbed “Apple Jack” by a toddler grandchild, Jack was
a hero in more ways than one. Born July 15, 1917, his life began in
San Pedro, California with father George, mother Edna, brother
Robert and sister Pat.

Jack tragically lost his father George at the age of seven. Intent
to make up for the loss, he lived, loved, parented, and
grandparented with passion.

Looking for work, and anticipating World War II, he joined the Army
Air Corps in 1938. As a crew chief with the 17th Bomb Group, he
applied to pilot school and graduated. While training in Oklahoma in
1942, Jack met Sara Tracy, “Sally” as he affectionately called her.
She was a Navy WAVE. They married Jan. 8, 1944.

Jack flew many planes, but exhibited his mettle flying 206 missions
over The Hump (Himalayan Mountains) in the C-46 Commando for which
he was highly decorated, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses
and two Air Medals. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 28
years of active and reserve service.

He enjoyed post-war life in the aviation and aerospace industries. A
voracious reader, with tastes ranging from history to mysteries, he
always enjoyed Popular Mechanics magazine.

We fondly remember Jack’s love of everyone in his generosity, intent
personal interest in others, and his reminiscence of family
reunions. A gentle soul, he enjoyed holiday gatherings and weekend
trips with immediate and extended family. Whether it was turkey
dinner at home, horseback riding, fishing, motorcycling, or RVing
the country with Sally, his wife of 73 years, Jack’s passion was
kinship. Sharing his belly laugh, he would often have to recover
from his own jokes. Giggling, and shyly sinking his head into his
shoulders he would gather his composure and continue. Embarrassed by
a kiss, his gentle demeanor will be sorely missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to
Hospice of Havasu in Jackson Pope’s name.
