Mary L. Melander, 81, of Prescott, Arizona, passed away April 14, 2017. She was born in North Adams, Massachusetts, in 1936 and was the only child of Catherine and Anthony Roedel.
She graduated from St. Joseph High School, second in her class in 1953. From there, she went on to attend St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1956.
She worked as an RN in the local hospital for a year prior to moving to California with her roommates. In 1960, Mary met and married Edward Melander.
Together they had two children, Joel and Christina, moving to various Air Force Bases for Ed’s career before settling the family in Oxnard, Calif. Joel died in a motorcycle accident six days after his 21st birthday. Christina Therrien lives in Oxnard, California, and has two children, Joel Thomas Therrien and Nicole Therrien.
Mary was a member of the Society of Decorative Painters for 23 years, and Sunshine Chair for the local Prescott chapter of same; she was a member of Sacred Heart Church, where she also worked in the Altar Society and sang in the choir.
Mary will join Joel in the family plot in Oxnard. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Prescott on a date to be determined in the near future, which will be announced in the Prescott newspaper.
