Murdered By Matabeles !

No Longer any Doubt as to the Fate of H. N. Palmer and W. H. Johnson.

A Letter Received in Prescott Giving Details of Their Ambush and Murder.

W. J. Martin, the mining man, has received a letter from James Cassidy, giving a few more details of the murder of H. N. Palmer and W. H. Johnson, than has ever been received before. While but a few particulars are given, the letter confirms as a fact what has heretofore only been a surmise, that the unfortunate companion of Palmer, whose name has not been mentioned in the press telegrams, was W. H. Johnson, of Prescott.

Cassiday writes as follows from Pretroria, under date of April 19: 'Palmer and his party were murdered while going to look at a mine and he was one of the first that was killed. He wrote me a letter the day that he left for the mine. They were ambushed at the Shangani river between Bulywayo and Pretoria. I saw the official list yesterday of the killed and there is no mistake, that Palmer and Johnson were two of the victims. I would have been with the party had I made my connections as I expected at Johannesburg. I expect to leave here in a few days for Rhodesia and if I get through alive, I will find the graves of Palmer and Johnson and do what I can to mark the spot.

It is feared that Mr. Grenfell must be killed, as he is known to have left his mine property for Gwalo or Bulawayo the day before the first murders were reported, and he has never been heard of since. He was accompanied by Gourlay's mine manager, an American named Bob White, and a Cape boy in a Cape cart with mules. They were well armed, but on the Shangani river would probably have rushed right into the impi, which killed Hammond, Palmer and Johnson's party.

He writes very encouragingly of the country; says that times are good, wages high and money plentiful.

Transcriber's note: Typed as printed in this article. To my knowledge the exact place of Mr. Palmer's burial is not know. He was a resident of Prescott for many years and his first wife and step-son are buried at the Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
