Kentucky Standard (Bardstown, Kentucky) Saturday, January 21, 2017 Gladys Lee (Hibbs) Smith, 104, of Bardstown, died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, in her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Cox's Creek, on March 27, 1912. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Smith; her parents, Cora Pierce and Alfred Brashear Hibbs; two sisters and seven brothers. Survivors include her four children, Elizabeth Pierce Shaw of Wickenburg, Ariz., John Gregory Smith, of Annapolis, Md., Lee Ellen Smithkier, of Bardstown, and James Douglas Smith, of Killingworth, Conn.; six grandchildren, B. Bradford Shaw, Justin M. Shaw, Natalie Shaw Dalton, Jonathan T. Smithkier, Gregory S. Smithkier, and Abigail Hibbs Smith; four great-grandchildren, Susanne and Jack Shaw and Kate and Lucy Dalton; and many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, a dedicated teacher of many years at Bardstown Elementary School, a mentor of bridge players, and a dear friend to many. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be directed to the Guthrie Opportunity Center of Nelson County, 900 Nutter Drive, Bardstown, KY 40004 and Hospice of Nelson County, 111 N. Third Street, Bardstown, KY 40004.
