Eugene Register-Guard (Eugene, Oregon) Sunday, January 31, 2016 James Mellott (1923-2016) Jim (Jimmy) Mellott passed away January 16, 2016 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born February 23, 1923 in Wickenburg, Arizona to Henry and Myrtle Mellott. Moving to Springfield as a boy, Jim attended schools locally. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served to the end of World War II in the South Pacific aboard the battleship USS New Mexico which saw many battles and was twice damaged by suicide planes during Jim's service. Jim married Mona Peeples in 1947 and they remained married for 68 years. He worked at Nicolai Doors and retired in 1985. He is preceded in death by his parents and five siblings. He is survived by his wife Mona, a daughter Shelly Mellott, as on Jett Mellott, and a granddaughter Shaina Levy all of Springfield. Also sisters Gertie Nitcher of Yuma, Arizona and Darleen Bostic of Springfield. Jim's legacy is one of a life well lived. He built his family's hillside home, loved gardening and sports. He had many friends and was appreciated for his humor and the joy that he brought to others. A family celebration of life will be held at a later time.
