Gary R. Maitland, 75, formerly of Gettysburg, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at home. He was the loving husband of Joyce A. (Riley) Maitland, Hanover. They would have celebrated 55 years of marriage on Wednesday, March 22, 2017.

He was born October 14, 1941 in Hanover, the son of Helen Louise (Strine) Maitland, Gettysburg and the late Russell "Chip" William Maitland.

Gary served in the United States Navy and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1962. He was a member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, the Hanover Elks BPOE #763, the Gettysburg American Legion Post #202 and the Gettysburg Eagles Aerie #1562. Gary enjoyed playing golf, watching golf on TV and was a member of the Gettysburg Country Club. He also enjoyed watching the annual Army Navy game and flower gardening.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his children, Stephen R. Maitland and wife, Melinda, Alpharetta, GA, Scott A. Maitland, Hanover and Wendy L. Flax and husband, Jon, Gettysburg; granddaughters, Elizabeth, Sarah and Emily Maitland and Jessica, Paige and Alaine Flax; great-grandchildren, Abby Flax and Asher Hamilton; and brothers, Greg Maitland, Wickenburg, AZ, Eric Maitland, Gettysburg, Tedd Maitland, Scottsdale, AZ and Rusty Maitland and wife, Lori, Phoenix, AZ.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 26, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg with Rev. Luis A. Nyiri officiating. The family will receive friends and share memories from 6 p.m. until the start of the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Gary R. Maitland may be made to the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore St., Gettysburg, PA 17325.
