Dorothy Bemus, age 99, passed away July 15, 2017, in Surprise.

Dorothy was born Oct. 3, 1917 on the family farm in Sodus, Mich., to William and Sarah Pohlmann. She was raised and attended schools there.

Following her schooling she began working as a waitress locally and met Harry Glenn Murphy. They were married shortly after and made their home in Dowagiac, Mich., where Harry worked as a carpenter and Dorothy began working as a telephone operator which she did for more than 30 years. Harry preceded her in death in 1966, and she later married John Grenawalt. She and John resided in Muskegon and she continued working for AT&T. Some years later John passed away and Dorothy continued working for a while until retiring. She then relocated to Arizona in the early 1980s, settling in Wickenburg. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church as well as the Gem & Mineral Club and was active in the community. She remarried Louis Bemus and enjoyed their time together traveling and seeing the country. Louis preceded her in death. Dorothy had been living here in Wickenburg until recently when for health reasons she moved to a care home in Surprise. She was always an avid reader and even upon losing her sight still pursued reading through audio books. She was a real Diamondbacks fan and spent hours watching and listening to the games.

She is survived by her daughter Jo Ann Peterson of Wickenburg and a sister Henrietta Lace of Dowagiac, Mich.; and two grandsons Jeff (Tracey) Peterson of San Diego and Jerry Peterson of Wickenburg; and great-grandson Declan Peterson of San Diego.

Friends may offer online condolences at www.wickenburgfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home & Crematory.
