Shepherd, 82-year-old Pecos Valley pioneer automobile dealer who first came to Carlsbad 60 years ago, died today at 1:30 a.m. at his home at 911 North Alameda Street following an extended illness. Mr. Shepherd had been in failing health for several years. Mr. Shepherd was a pioneer in the automobile business, having been a Ford dealer in the Pecos Valley, here and at Roswell, for 39 years. Funeral rites for Mr. Shepherd will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at West Funeral Home, with Dr. W.S. Dando of the First Presbyterian Church officiating Burial will be in the Carlsbad Cemetery. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Bernice Russ and Mrs. Dean Wait of Carlsbad and Mrs. J.D. Hunter of Midland, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. W.G. Jones of Montgomery, Ala., four grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Born November 15, 1869 at Georgiana, Ala., Mr. Shepherd came to Carlsbad, then named Eddy, in 1892. From here he moved to Prescott, Ariz., where he was married to Margaret Barrington in 1897. He and Mrs. Shepherd moved to Roswell about 1900 and remained until they moved to Carlsbad in 1931. Mrs. Shepherd preceded him in death in 1943. Mr. Shepherd was prominent in civic and social affairs. He served on the city council in Roswell for several years. He was a Mason, a Knight Templer and a Shriner. After moving to Roswell, he was associated with the Joyce-Pruit Company. In 1913 he became the Ford dealer and merged with the Roswell Auto Company. He was associated with this firm until 1931, when he purchased the Carlsbad Auto Company and moved to Carlsbad. He was still interested in the firm with Dean Wait and Henry Felts at the time of his death. He was well known and had many friends throughout New Mexico.
