Virginia “Dolly” Sue Nordyke, 89, passed away on Nov. 15, 2017, in
Prescott, Arizona. She was born on Nov. 27, 1927, in Riverside,
California, to Carl Lee and Virginia Malena (England) Grant.
Dolly graduated from Poly High School in Riverside, California, in
1945. She graduated from Riverside City College in 1947 where she
studied accounting. She married Bob on Sept. 11, 1948. They moved to
Yucca Valley, California, in 1961.
Dolly remained a stay-at-home mom until 1968 when she joined the
staff of Yucca Valley High School as a Library Assistant and Student
Activities Accountant. She retired in 1984. Dolly enjoyed quilting,
cake decorating, collecting covered candy dishes and traveling the
country in their motor home. She enjoyed her volunteer work with the
Navy Marine Corps Relief Society for over 20 years making crib
quilts for layettes given to expectant wives of military personnel.
She earned numerous awards for her work which totaled 15,000 hours.
Dolly and Bob moved to Prescott, Arizona, in 1996 to be closer to
family and enjoy retirement. Her family always came first.
Dolly was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Virginia; brothers,
Carl Ray and Jimmy Lee Grant; her husband of 62 years, Robert “Bob”
Leland Nordyke; and her son, Gregory (Greg) Todd Nordyke.
Dolly is survived by her sister, Betty (Paul) Roberts; niece, Margie
(Tony) Delevati; daughter, Shelley (Frank) Buschbacher; daughter-in-
law, Sharon Nordyke; grandchildren, Autumn, Todd, Jeff, Aubree,
Merissa, Adam, Josh, Hans and Erick; 12 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Dolly will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4,
2017, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 630 Park Ave., Prescott,
Arizona. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be
made to the Groom Creek Fire, 1110 E. Friendly Pines Road, Prescott,
AZ 86303 or Arizona Wildfire & Incident Management Academy, 1700
Iron Springs Road, Prescott, AZ 86305, in memory of Dolly and her
son Greg.
