Gene A. Manzer, M.D. Gene “Doc” Manzer was born July 30, 1935, in
Santa Monica, California, and passed unexpectedly from the love of
his family and friends Dec. 3, 2017, in Prescott, Arizona.

A respected physician, proud veteran, devoted husband, loving father
and grandfather, and honorable friend, Gene made an indelible impact
on his community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Gene was the youngest of five children born to Earl E. Manzer, Sr.,
and Erna L. Manzer of Nebraska and grew up in Venice, California,
where he graduated high school in 1953.

A bright and hard-working student, Gene was awarded an academic
scholarship to Stanford University, where he completed his
bachelor’s degree in 1957.

As a youth, Gene dreamed of a career in archaeology and history, but
medicine was his ultimate calling. He went on to graduate from the
University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1961 and
completed Residency Specialty training in obstetrics and gynecology
at John Wesley County Hospital and Hospital of the Good Samaritan,
Los Angeles, 1962-1965.

Gene’s professional distinctions included board certification in OB-
GYN, membership in the American College of OB-GYN, and associate
clinical professorship at Stanford Medical School. Gene retired
after 30 years of practice in California and Arizona but continued
to serve the community in his retirement by volunteering more than
5,000 hours to local hospitals, including the VA Medical

Center of Northern Arizona and the Yavapai Regional Medical Center.

A true patriot, Gene was honored to serve his country multiple
times. His military service included roles as Medical Officer, US
Navy, with rank of LCDR and CDR, 1967-1969, and Medical Officer,
USAF, with rank of Lt. Col., 1983-1985.

Gene enjoyed participating in WWII and Old West reenactments, a
testament to his lifelong love of history. His other interests
included firearms, military and western collecting, and reading. He
was active with a number of Prescott organizations, including the
American Legion Post, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Jeep Posse, The
Renegades Old West Reeinactors, Prescott Regulators and Their Shady
Ladies, Arizona Rangers, the Prescott Victorian Society, the Elks
Lodge, and Citizen’s Cemetery.

Gene was also a devoted Catholic at Sacred Heart Church. He was
preceded in death by his parents; his brothers,

Earl Manzer, Jr., Ralph Manzer, Richard Manzer; and his sister,
Geraldine Susens. Survivors include his beloved wife of 46 years,
Mary V. Manzer; sons, Mark, Brett and Sean; daughter, Dru;
granddaughters, Violet and Athena; and grandson, Benjamin.

Memorial Services will be scheduled in January 2018.

While there is no easy path through the sadness, there is healing
through the quiet passage of time. Gene, you were so loved and will
be missed by many. God love and bless you.
