Negro Dies In Car Accident

James Campbell, about 30 years of age, colored night watchman
employed by the Crutchfield garage, was fatally injured about 10
o'clock last night when the roadster in which he and two companions
were returning from Phoenix overturned on the Hassayampa Trail about
26 miles south of Prescott and pinned him under the car.

Gregory Hobson, a barber at the Hassayampa Barber shop, miraculously
escaped death when he was caught under the side of the car, only his
head protruding and with what happened to be the weight of the heavy
machine resting across the back of his neck. Russell Cannon, the
third occupant of the car, who is a porter at the barber shop, was
thrown clear of the machine when it turned over. The top of the
machine was crushed flat into the mud by the weight of the car and
Campbell is believed to have been caught between it and the wheel.

Help was rushed to the two trapped men by passing motorists, who
found they were unable to lift the machine, a service station man in
Peeples Valley going to their aid, and later driving Campbell, who
was believed still to be alive, and the two others to Prescott.
Campbell was found to be dead when they reached Mercy hospital,
however.

Cannon suffered only a bump on the forehead as the result of the
accident. Hobson, was more severely bruised, but none of the trio
received any lacerations.

Campell is survived by a wife and step-son. His home was at 135 No.
Granite street.

Transcriber's note: Mr. Campbell is buried in an unmarked grave at
the Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
