Miner Killed In Accident At The Ruth
Life Crushed Out In An Instant By Cave-In Of Over Four Tons Of
Formation
By disregarding the warning given by miners at the Ruth camp to not
enter the 135 foot level until the crew was ready, John Carlson
sacrificed his life yesterday afternoon.
A few minutes after 12 o'clock he stated he would go below to remove
a huge boulder from the hanging wall that interfered with the track
on that level, that timbering might be carried on without delay as
well as mucking. A few minutes before the shift was ready to begin
work a muffled sound emanated from that zone and instantly all on
top were lowered. A cave in had occurred, and the body of Carlson
was found buried underneath with life extinct.
It is presumed he shot away the boulder that held at lease four tons
on the formation in place, which instantly fell, covering him.
The deceased was aged about 62 years, and until recently had
followed placer mining along Indian creek, being a new arrival in
the county.
The news was brought to the city immediately by ---------- Wilhelm,
general manager of the company, who expressed deep regret for this
accident at his camp, which was the first since he assumed charge.
Judge McLane was summoned from this city to hold an inquest, the
verdict of the jury being in accordance with the above facts,
without attaching any liability to the management of the property.
