Cartter, One Of The First Of Her Sex To Enter Arizona, Has Gone Away To Join Other Pioneers Throughout the state and particularly in this section of Arizona it will be learned with sincere sorrow that Mrs. H. H. Cartter has been called by the reaper, her death occurring last night at 9 o'clock at the Mercy Hospital, blood poisoning being the fatal affliction. In looking backward to the shadowy days of Arizona's struggles in the fore part of the 60's, the American woman of beautiful character, firm will, and unflinching devotion to kindred, forms a bright chapter of the gloomy past. Of this ennobling type was the deceased. She was among the first women to enter this wilderness reeking with perils to life, insecurity to property, ad privations to the home. Through it all this beloved woman passed into better days without a murmur, and her story of the long ago chills the warmest heart again in another sacrificing soul passing on. Mrs. Cartter was universally known for her kindly nature, generous disposition and upright character, enjoying the esteem and respect of all pioneers, which splendid trait of her womanhood she carries into the unknown. For over half a century she made her home in Prescott, and for the first time in that long span of years, it was only a few months ago, she went away to other lands to renew girlhood days with kith and kin. True to her premonition the end was approaching, and her passing away recalls the familiar adage 'in the midst of life we are in death.' Very few of her blood remain, and as the curtain again drops over another beloved pioneer woman, those who survive have the tender sympathy of many in this and other communities of the state. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. ---------------------------------------- Prescott Journal Miner, Prescott, Arizona Tuesday, February 25, 1919, page 3, column 5 Notice Of Funeral - The funeral services for Mrs. Serilda Cartter will be held at Lester Ruffner's mortuary chapel Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
