| Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ >>> Published on Friday, January 5, 2018 <<< Ethel May Matthes, 94, of Lake Havasu City, passed away Dec. 30, 2017. She was born Sept. 11, 1923 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Wilford and Amy Hartford. Raised in Winnipeg, Ethel went into the banking industry after graduating high school. During her banking career, she was employed at Bank of America for 30 years, retiring in 1984. Ethel and Ernest Matthes were joined in holy matrimony in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on Aug. 24, 1946. From 1952-1990, Ernest and Ethel resided in California, moving on to Lynden, Washington, Las Vegas, Nevada and finally making their permanent home in 1997 in beautiful Havasu. Ethel was full of life and lived it to the fullest. She loved her church and loved greeting the congregation at Lamb of God Lutheran Church of which she was a proud founding member, along with her husband Ernest. She also enjoyed a great game of golf. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilford and Amy Hartford and husband Ernest Matthes, who passed in 2002. Ethel is survived by her son Bryan Matthes of Havasu, grandsons Todd and Shawn Matthes and five great-grandchildren: Ean, Joseph, Skylar, Hunter, and Magie. Ethel’s service is 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 2791 Inca Dr. Services were placed in the care of Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home.
