The Smith family - father and mother Irving and Estelle, sisters Erica
and Tania, their spouses Bram and Brian, and nephew Jason - are
saddened to announce Lawrence’s tragic death while cycling with his
wife Debora (nee Robison) in Lake Havasu City. Debora was instantly
killed; Lawrence died July 5, at the University Medical Centre, Trauma
Unit, Las Vegas, Nev.

A resolutely independent man, Larry embraced challenges. He was a
consummate athlete, whether climbing El Capitan or the summit of Mont
Blanc, riding the big surf of Hawaii or outrigger canoe racing. Above
all, he was a passionate cyclist, training and competing at the
highest level until the end. Challenges and success also came in
entrepreneurial form, first as a pioneer in the designing and
production of windsurfers in Hawaii and Europe, later in tirelessly
promoting his favorite sport through his bicycle shop in Lake Havasu
City. Wherever he turned his talents, including in the kitchen (his
Tarte Tatin was the stuff of legend), Lawrence brought the same
commitment. His aspiration for the summit in every endeavor will
forever be an inspiration to those who knew him. Tragically curtailed,
though it was, we can take comfort in the knowledge that Lawrence
lived life to the fullest with determination and enthusiasm.

A memorial in Lake Havasu on July 7, was attended by his many friends
and fellow cyclists. Lawrence was affectionately called “The Bike
Boss”. Also, “He took a bunch of us who are jackasses and turned us
into racehorses.” He will be sorely missed.

“The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsmen of a stiller town.”
- E. Hausman
