Dorothea Shurtz (nee Kumpel) died peacefully on Aug. 7, 2017, in Glen Burnie, Md., at the age of 89. Dottie was born July 12, 1928, in New Jersey to Harry and Mary Kumpel. After raising her children, she cared for the mentally handicapped and many elderly. She loved to travel and lived in many places across the country. Dottie was active in the Presbyterian Church of Fairton, N.J. Dottie survived by her children, Mary Sherman (Dr. I Gary Sherman) of Millersville, Md., Harry Batten (Kim Batten) of Tucson, and Trudy Kennedy (Mark Kennedy) of Rio Rancho; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She made the world a better place.
