Veteran Co. Recorder Grace Chapman Dies

One of the best known pioneers and public servants, Mrs. Grace Laura
Chapman, died Saturday night at the Arizona Pioneers' Home here.
She was a member of the pioneer Genung family of Peeples Valley and
served as Yavapai County Recorder for 32 years.

Mrs. Chapman had recently marked her 76th birthday, which she
observed in May with a dinner at the home of her niece, Hester
Passmore of Prescott. In ill health for the past four years, Mrs.
Chapman had made her residence at the Pioneers' Home for two and a
half years.

Born May 17, 1883, in Peeples Valley, she was the youngest child of
Charles B. and Ida Hester Genung, who were among the first settlers
in the Peeples ?Valley area to which they journeyed in 1864 from San
Bernardino, Calif,, where the had pioneered at an earlier date.

Attended Tempe -

Having attended school in Peeples Valley, Grace entered Tempe Normal
School (now Arizona State University) from which she graduated. She
was married to Harry Chapman, who died in the4 1940's.

Mrs. Chapman served as county recorder here from Jan. 1, 1923 to
Dec. 31, 1954, w2hen present County Recorder Frank Bauer took
office. he had been state president of the County Recorders'
Association and had made many friends statewide during her career.

She was a member of the local Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodges and
was active in the Yavapai County Democratic Woman's Club. She had
been a participant in numerous Smoki Ceremonials.

Active In Charities -

Mrs. Chapman was well-known for her many charities. She had done
volunteer service for the Red Cross and was active in the charitable
programs of the Good Fellows, who in times past aided the need here
at Christmas time and on other occasions.

Surviving her are her daughter, Helen Wilburn of Sunland, Calif.,
son, William Chapman of Prescott; brothers, Dan Genung of Tucson and
Ed Genung of Peeples Valley; four grandchildren, Joan Duff of
Sunland, Calif., Frances Winslow of Altadena, Calif., Jimmy and
Elaine Chapman of Prescott; a great-grandchild, Stevie Duff of
Sunland, Calif.; nieces and nephews, Mrs. Passmore of Prescott, Fred
Genung of Prescott, Grace Moore of Bagdad, Jean Green of Tempe, and
Draga Lightner of Inglewood, Calif.; grand-niece and nephew,
Elizabeth Hook of Prescott and Charles Passmore of Bagdad; and
great-grand niece and nephews, Larry, Linda, and Patricia Ann Hook,
all of Prescott.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the
Ruffner Funeral Home by Dr. Charles Franklin Parker of the First
Congregational Church, Golden Rule Chapter No. 2, Order of Eastern
Star, of Prescott, will read the OES graveside service for her
interment in the family plot of Mountain View Cemetery.

Friends who wish to call at Ruffner's during the visitation period
may do so on Wednesday between 5 and 9 p.m.
