Newell Herrick, a citizen of Phoenix, well known in this territory,
formerly part proprietor of the Commercial Hotel, accidentally shot
and killed himself, last Thursday morning, at his home in Phoenix.
He had been annoyed by cats at night, and got up at three o’ clock
in the morning, and with a double action pistol, started to shoot
the felines. In going around the house in the darkness, he stumbled
over a small wagon with which the children had been playing, the
pistol being pressed to his stomach and discharged.
He lived until six o’clock the same evening, when he died.
