Mavis Carter, 97, passed away Sept. 8, in Youngtown. Mavis was born Feb. 7, 1920, in Innisfail, Alberta, Canada, to Curtis and Lula Jones. The family moved to Oakland, Calif., in 1922. Mavis learned the value of work at an early age with her responsibilities in the home. She met George E. Carter in Oakland and they later married on Oct. 13, 1939. They made their home in Oakland and in 1954 they moved to Oregon and later Colorado. George and Mavis came to Arizona in 1985 and eventually settled in Congress in 1990. Mavis was active in the community and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her husband George preceded her in 2014. She is survived by her children Ken (Dorothy) Carter of Mesa, and Paul (Kathie) Carter of Congress; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. A visitation was held on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Wickenburg Funeral Home with a graveside service on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Congress Cemetery.
