Mexican Killed Probably By Accident
An unidentified Mexican was found dead Sunday in his wagon on the
road near Bumblebee, and reports were circulated that a murder had
been committed. Sheepherders made the discovery who at once
communicated with Mayer, and Sheriff Davis hastened to the place and
a coroner's jury from Mayer was assembled.
An investigation of the corpse revealed the cause of death as
probably accidental. A 45-calibre revolver was lying on the floor
of the wagon and the fatal wound was in the head. The bullet
entered the skull under the right eye brow and death must have been
instantaneous.
On the man's body was a shoulder strap holding an empty scabbard,
and an investigation of the affair lead to a verdict of accidental
death.
It is presumed the unfortunate man had dropped something from the
seat while driving and in stooping to pick it up the gun fell from
the scabbard and was discharged when the hammer struck a piece of
metal in the bed of the wagon.
He was traveling alone and came from the Black canyon country. He
was seen to pass Bumblebee station and his destination was probably
Humboldt. There was nothing on his person by which he could be
identified, his features not being discernible owing to the heavy
coating of blood.
Transcriber's note: The above mentioned man was identified as
Christibal Huerta. He is buried in an unmarked grave at the
Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
