Arizona Republic (Phoenix, AZ) Sunday, November 12, 2017 Laurence James "Long John" Girard Died on Sept. 30, 2017 at the age of 84, at Hospice of the Valley in Surprise, AZ. After 11 operations and a courgeous battle against esophageal cancer, which he conquered, he finally lost the battle with Myelodysplasia (a bone marrow blood disorder). Known to his friends as Long John (6'7") he was born in Trail, B.C. He was a kind hearted, fun loving man with a zest for life, a sense of humor that brought smiles and laughter to all who knew him. He never forgot your birthday, always a call or card. Also known as the "Candy Man" to all the nurses and waitresses who served him and helped him. He will be missed by all. He also was a great bowler and outdoors man. Enjoyed making his famous Elk Chili and New England Clam Chowder for his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his first wife Kay, his mother Iris and father Maurice, sister Madilene; survived by 2 sons James of Baniff, B.C. and Casey of Phoenix, cousin Gordon (Deb) of Pitt Meadows, B.C. and the love of his life and caregiver, Sandee of Wickenburg. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hospice of the Valley as will blood donations which are much needed and will also honor his memory.
