Mother Of One Of County's Largest Families Dies In A California Town

Mrs. Alvina Bennett, an old pioneer resident of the Groom Creek
section and mother of one of the largest families of Yavapai county,
died at 8 o'clock Sunday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
Minnie Whiteside, in Pomona, Calif. She was 70 years old the third
of last February.

Mrs. Bennett, whose children and grandchildren are well known
residents of Groom Greek and other sections of the county, is
survived by seven children, 30 grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren. Her husband, Chas. Henry Bennett, with whom she came
to Prescott and settled in the Groom Creek district in 1878, died 11
years ago.

Mrs. Bennett was born in Half-Moon Bay, Calif. in 1853. She married
in California and came to Prescott with her husband and four
children in 1876. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett went back to California
after a short time, but returned here to make their home permanently
in 1878.

Their first home was on the site of the new Banning Creek dam now
being erected by the city. They later moved to the present site of
the old Bennett homestead, about a mile above the Banning Creek
damsite, where they engaged in ranching and homesteading.

Mrs. Bennett is survived by the following children: Mrs. C. W.
Bennett of Clarkdale, Mrs. Minnie Whiteside of Pomona, Lorenzo
Bennett, of Hillside, Mrs. Alina Mackin of Groom Creek, Grant
Bennett of Groom Creek, Birdie Maxwell of Clarkdale and Mrs. Allie
Johnson of Prescott. Thirty grandchildren are also living.

Preparations for the funeral services at the Catholic church in
Prescott are being made. The services will probably be held at 2
o'clock Thursday afternoon.
