Summons Call Away Another Pioneer

(From Wednesday's Daily)

After suffering intense agony since June 14, when she was seriously
scalded in an auto accident near Senator, Mrs. Mary E. Merrick
passed away yesterday forenoon at 11:10 o'clock a the Pioneer's
Home.

Those who were with her during the long illness speak in admirable
terms of her heroic efforts to avert the inevitable, and yet when
she realized hope was one, with a refined demeanor she said she was
ready to go.

The death of Mrs. Merrick calls away another prominently known
pioneer woman who for over forty years had made her home in
Prescott.

In early days she will be pleasantly remembered as one of the
talented women in Arizona in her line of literary work. He poems
attracted wide attention, and she contributed to many of the leading
magazines, winning high renown for her altruistic ideas. Her home
life was also consistently followed along these lines, and her
generous nature knew no limit. There are many instances which can
be recalled wherein this benevolent woman figured conspicuously in
her charitable work, her sacrifices being many. She contributed
many articles in the long ago strongly advocating woman suffrage,
and as well was she an ardent believer in temperance.

She was born at Albany, Wisconsin, November 19, 1848, was nearing
her 70th year.

Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. M. C. Surita, of Highland, Cal., who
was at the side of her mother when the end came, while two sons,
Robert M. and William C. Hanson, resides in this city.

Mrs. Merrick will be laid away this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock,
services being held in Ruffner's chapel.

Transcriber's note: Mrs. Merrick is buried in an unmarked grave at
the Pioneer Home Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
