Priscilla Morine Sommer (Reed) was born to George and Anka Reed on
May 30, 1922, in Pierre, South Dakota. She passed away peacefully on
Feb. 5 at 7:45 MST in Prescott Valley, Arizona, at the age of 95.
Priscilla graduated from Pierre High School in 1940 and attended
college at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota.
She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics in 1945.
Priscilla married her high school sweetheart, Maynard Charles
Sommer, on July 14, 1945. Together they made their home in Pierre,
where Maynard was employed by the State Highway Department and
Priscilla taught Biology at Pierre High School. Priscilla taught
until the birth of her first child, Reed Daniel Sommer, in 1949. In
1953 she gave birth to David Eugene Sommer. She remained a home
keeper and loving mother and wife for the remainder of her time in
Pierre.
Priscilla was extremely active in the First Baptist Church in Pierre
and a proud member of the PEO Club. She volunteered as a poll worker
at local, state and national elections for many years. She loved to
make clothes for family and friends and was a great cook, baker and
crafter. She enjoyed refinishing furniture and making things a
little bit better for all she knew.
Her son David, with the help of Dot Gordon, moved Priscilla to
Prescott, Arizona, in the spring of 2009 to be closer to him. She
resided at a memory care facility in Prescott and later David moved
her into an assisted living home called “A Little Bit of Heaven” in
Prescott Valley. The staff at the home always commented on her sense
of humor, kindness and happy smile. Priscilla’s family wishes to
thank Helen Peter, owner of “A Little Bit of Heaven,” and the
caregivers: Brian Bradley, Sue Tabor and Janette Geise, and Maggie’s
Hospice of Prescott, for all their love and assistance.
Priscilla was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard; son, Daniel
(Reed); parents; brothers, George and Charles; and sister, Elsie.
She is survived by her son, David of Prescott; grandchildren, Sarah
Phillips of Dallas, Texas, Julianna Sommer of Minneapolis,
Minnesota, and Daniel Sommer of Presho, South Dakota; and six great-
grandchildren.
A Memorial Service at the First Baptist Church in Pierre, will be
