State Pioneer Belle Monroe Dies at 91

Mrs. D. Belle Monroe, of an early-day Arizona ranching family, died
Tuesday, Oct. 13, in a Prescott hospital.

A resident of Arizona for 80 years, she had moved to Prescott 10
years ago.

She was born May 25, 1868, in California, a member of the Phippeny
family which pioneered in that state before becoming well-known
early settlers of Arizona.

When Belle was 11, the family moved to the Ash Creek area of
Arizona, where they were long-time cattle ranchers.

She married Essler Monroe, also a rancher in the same vicinity, who
died a number of years ago.

Surviving Mrs. Monroe are three nephews, Ernest Phippeny, Prescott;
Ralph Phippeny, Camp Verde; and Charles Phippeny, Phoenix.

Burial will be tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Middle Verde Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at the Ruffner Funeral Home tonight
between 6 and 9.
