MONTONYE, Richard Ray

Weekly Journal-Miner, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, December 29, 1915, page 1, columns 3-5 Wave Of Crime Is Sweeping County Ray Montonye Shot at Santa Maria by M. Bowman With Rifle A wave of crime apparently sweeping away the gayety of the holiday season in Yavapai county. Since Christmas day two killings and a robbery have taken place and the county authorities have been kept busier for the last two days than they have been for some time past. One of the killings took place at Wagoner and the other at Santa Maria while the robbery occurred at Puntenney. M. Bowman, a cowpuncher of Santa Maria, Sunday morning after a quarrel with Ray Montenye, another cowpuncher, shot and killed him with a rifle. Bowman claims the homicide was in self-defense. The man who did the killing is now in county jail, having surrendered to the officers. Bowan was brought to Prescott from Santa Maria by Deputy Guy Bozarth. Judge C. H. McLane, Sheriff Young, Deputy County Attorney Morgan and a coroner's jury held an inquest over the body of Montonye yesterday but no particulars were received owing to the fact that the wires are down.
